Tournament PolicyHistorically, the Hamilton Wenham Youth Lacrosse (HWYL) program has participated in a number of in season tournaments. These events have been a positive experience for our players and their families and we would like to continue the tradition of participating in certain events.
The HWYL Board with the input of program coaches has decided to enter one team from each age group into most tournaments. These are not a Mass. Bay Youth Lacrosse sponsored tournaments and different rules apply. The level of play at these tournaments are higher than what we are accustomed to in our regular Sunday games, as hoped and expected by tournament directors. Tournament games are typically played at greater speeds and can be more physical. Teams advance through the event on a won-lost and "points for, points against" system, and a winner is declared using that system.
All who are available are welcome to participate in these tournament. However, due to the competitive nature of this tournament we will NOT follow our normal policy of providing equal playing time. In fact, some players who decide to participate may see very little or NO playing time depending on the number of participants and the judgment of the coaches during the games. Parents and players should consider this in deciding whether to participate or not.
The biggest challenge our program faces in participating in any tournament is deciding how many teams to enter. Our preference is to enter all of our teams however past experience has shown this to be very difficult, especially late season events like the VIP Tournament, as many players have begun their summer trips and activities.
The Board believes that entering one potentially large team, that allows all players to experience the thrills and spills of tournament play (even if only from the sideline), is a better solution than excluding players entirely. We hope this notice will make your summer planning easier. We appreciate your support in making this difficult decision. If you have any questions please call Coach Vivian at 978 468-1042.
